South Thames College
South Thames College is one of the largest education
and training providers in South London. Maintaining
its Ofsted rating of ‘Good’ in 2012, it offers a wide
variety of full and part time courses, vocational and
higher education courses including MBAs and
university ‘top up’ courses.
Students can take advantage of learning facilities
such as the modern IT and library services, and more
pastoral services such as the ‘enrichment room’ – to
relax, socialise in a safe environment and talk informally
to student support workers. Indeed, its safeguarding
work was judged ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
Vocational studies have been boosted by significant
capital investment. The College’s impressive facilities
include workshops for engineering, motorcycle
maintenance and musical instrument making, a
TV studio, music studios with mixing and editing
equipment, a range of lecture theatres and classroom
spaces, as well as electronics labs and CAD offices,
fully commercial hair and beauty salons, a sports hall –
designed to Sport England Club standards – a new
health and social care wing, and a performance theatre.
Lecturers often work in, or come from, the industry
they teach so provide genuine insight and real-world
experience to the students.
Students are encouraged to contribute to College
life and their own development and entertainment
through sports clubs, volunteering and participation
in student forums.
In September 2013, the brand new, world class
Hospitality and Catering Academy opens. With several
teaching kitchens and a curriculum selected in
collaboration with a top chef, it will offer a proper
foundation for a career in the sector. The work
placements offered to achieving students (including
at high profile venues such as Wimbledon) and a
commercial restaurant, providing real-world experience
for kitchen and front of house staff will also deepen
students’ understanding of the industry.
The College works with local communities to provide
work skills training to unemployed people and has
strong business and community links to underpin its
training provision. Its dedicated Prince’s Trust team
is one of the most successful in London colleges.
Additionally, it runs short pre-employment training
programmes in partnership with local job centres.
The College is keen to celebrate students' success and
drive forward their ambition while creating an inclusive
environment. These many ingredients make South
Thames College a vibrant and challenging place to study.
