Welcome to the second Durham City Access Guide

Durham City is a beautiful and historic City that attracts visitors from all over the world and the production of this second Access Guide for Durham will I hope, help many more people make the most of their visit here.

Sitting snugly on a hilly peninsula, Durham's medieval streets and buildings pose some difficult issues for visitors. We strive to improve accessibility while maintaining a balance between the protection and preservation our heritage.

The introduction of the Cathedral bus has made visits to our renowned World Heritage site much easier and more comfortable in all weather conditions. We are also planning to significantly improve signage in the City centre during the next year as part of our Vision 2020 project. A new lighting strategy is also being developed.

The planned changes will help everyone access their favourite places in Durham more easily and I know that the shops, restaurants and cultural amenities featured in this guide will offer much more to increase your enjoyment during your visit to our City.
